Annual MeetingAll Lake Street stakeholders are invited to attend the Annual
Meeting. Featuring keynote speaker or speakers, this is a formal
business meeting at which the Lake Street Council reviews past year
accomplishments and all of the programs and events of the Council.
At this meeting, we introduce officers of our organization and announce
the slate and approve new members of the Board. We also take
nominations for future Board positions.
This year's annual meeting was on March 16th from 10:00 AM - noon. It was held at La Vina Restaurant, 3010 4th Ave. S. We had a panel discussion called Building Our Community’s Economic Future. Panelists were Tony Hull from Transit for Livable Communities, Ron Price from Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and Morgan Zehner from Zehner Consulting.
2009 Our 2009 guest speaker was State Senator Patricia Torres Ray. She spoke about how Lake Street businesses and residents can work with her and other legislators to get things accomplished at the state level. We also gave out our annual business & community awards, had board member elections, and reflected on the year we had and the year ahead.
2007 Ten area businesses and residential groups, representing the diversity of Lake Street, were presented with awards in recognition of what they have contributed to our communities. Three Hispanic businesses received awards: La Poblanita for expanding into a restaurant and bringing new life to the Bloomington area, Taqueria La Hacienda for their investment in La Hacienda Plaza, and Mercado Central for spurring economic development and attracting people of all ethnicities. Businesses new and old were recognized for their achievements. Schatzlein Saddle Shop was celebrating its 100th year this year, and is still going strong. Ingebretsen's has served this community for over 85 years, and owner Julie Ingebretsen maintains this unique Scandinavian location while also serving the community in many other ways. Hirshfield's has been on Lake Street since the 1930s, and is now in its 4th generation as a family-owned business. Newer businesses add a lot to Lake Street as well. Penn Cycle combines sales of efficient transportation with value and a social conscience. The Midtown YWCA, which opened in 2000, brought a wide variety of services to the area and helped economic development near Hiawatha. The Midtown Global Market (run by NDC, like the Mercado Central) and Town Talk Diner both opened in 2006, and have created a lot of buzz about Lake Street in their short time in our community. 2007's meeting also featured a presentation from Gene Goddard, of the Department for Employment and Economic Development. He spoke about how to connect local, state, and regional efforts for the benefit of Lake Street communities. You can download his presentation at the link below.
