January 13, 2010
Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- Most Lake Street businesses should now have or be
receiving soon Lake Street Council's 2010 membership
application form. As we move forward in 2010, your dues and
membership will be vital in helping us to accomplish our goals. You can
also read the letter and download the application on our website,
and also pay your dues online. Please also consider joining at the Silver
or Gold level, where you receive extra benefits!
- Uncle Hugo's and Uncle Edgar's were featured recently on
KARE 11 during a story
about
independent bookstores staying afloat. "A lot of people use
this as a destination, or an excuse to come into town," said owner Don
Blyly. You can read the story and view the video at the link.
- Old Arizona is currently hosting a 3 AM Productions double
feature
called Dumb/Sex, and it's been the subject of multiple
positive reviews lately. Ed
Huyck
at MinnPost says it has "moving performances and quick pace,"
while in the Daily Planet, Jay
Gabler says the show signals "larger ambitions while focusing on
serving as good company," and Matthew
Everett gives it four stars. The show runs through January 23rd.
- A public meeting for the Midtown power
lines proposal is scheduled for
February 10 at 6:00 PM, in Plaza Verde at 1516 E. Lake St.
As the Star Tribune reports, "Xcel has said it prefers to build the
lines along the rim of the
Midtown Greenway, which is a pedestrian and bike corridor one block
north of Lake Street. Xcel also proposed the alternatives of splitting
the lines between E. 28th Street and either E. 26th or E. 31st Street,
or burying them under 28th Street." We encourage Lake Street business
owners to attend and share their perspective.
- Elizabeth Glidden is now taking nominations for Ward 8
Leadership Awards. If you know a business or individual in Ward 8
(which includes the south of Lake Street from 35W to 14th Ave.), send
it to elizabeth.glidden@ci.minneapolis.mn.us by January 25. The awards
will be presented at her January 29 meeting.
- A clarification on a story from last week: The Wing Young Huie
"Lake Street USA" photos recently received by the City of Minneapolis
were donated by association-management firm The Harrington Company.
