February 17th: Using Social Media To Market Your Business

Bring your laptops and smart phones to this meeting for a hands-on social media workshop.  Social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook are free and effective ways to market your business and Monkey Island, a social media consulting firm, will show you how. Pizza Luce IV, the neighborhood’s social media rockstar, will be providing food and insight into their experience with the worlds of Twitter and Facebook.  Lunch is $10. March 4th: Window Rehab Energy Efficiency Workshop, at The Green Institute
6:30 - 8:30 PM, 2801 21st Ave. S.
This workshop will focus on giving homeowners the ability to choose the right option for improving the performance of their windows by making temporary or permanent fixes to reduce heat loss and air infiltration on existing windows, by reversing the effects of deterioration on older windows to enhance their durability, or by completely replacing the window itself.

Presented by Exposed Brick Theatre. Evolution is a performed reading of Aamera Siddiqui’s newest work — a coming-of-age story about cultural navigation, assimilation and realization. Written & performed by Aamera Siddiqui. Direction and dramaturgy by Meena Natarajan & Suzy Messerole.

Set the mood for Valentine's Day and join us for an evening of wine and chocolate tasting, the food and drink that most evoke the spirit of romance. Old Arizona is hosting this palate teasing, wonderfully decadent wine and chocolate tasting. Fine wines complemented by the right chocolate can be a match made in heaven! Members of the lovelorn public are invited to bring in old love letters, photographs, teddy bears, clothing, and other sentimental items that hold memories of an ex-love. At the event, there will be therapeutic devices such as paper shredders, large scissors to de-stuff the teddy bears, and other ways to help give closure to a love lost…and give participants a fresh start for Valentine’s Day.

Wednesdays February 17th – March 24th: Intaglio Class, at Highpoint Center for Printmaking
6:00 - 9:00 PM, 912 W. Lake St.
This course introduces participants to a variety of basic intaglio techniques including traditional and contemporary methods. A variety of etching tools, papers, and printing processes will also be demonstrated. Learn to create images comprised of line, texture, and tone printed from copper plates using such things as hard and soft ground, aquatint, sugar-lift and more! Oil based inks will be used throughout the course. All experience levels are welcome. Inks, tools, one copper plate and 2 sheets of 22" x 30" printmaking paper will be provided.

February 18th: Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, at Magers & Quinn

Magers & Quinn Booksellers is pleased to host the West Metro regional competition of "Poetry Out Loud." The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies of the United States to support the expansion of "Poetry Out Loud," which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

: Chinese New Year, at Midtown Global Market

Members from the Chinese Heritage Foundation will be on-hand for fortune telling and distributing red envelopes that are traditionally believed to usher in good luck for the New Year. Children can also take home their name written in traditional Chinese calligraphy. A donation to the Chinese Heritage Foundation is suggested for these services.  A traditional Chinese Lion Dance will commence at 7:00 PM, circling the Market with graceful movements and magnificent colors, to help ring in the year of the Tiger.

Rembrandt. One of greatest painters. It's only fitting that a series based on Master Works illuminates the works of this true master. Commedian Beauregard teams up with six Twin Cities playwrights and six up-and-coming directors to translate six of Rembrandt’s works to the stage.

February 28th: Concert To Benefit Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership

Performances by songwriters and instrumentalists Linda Breitag, Ray Makeever, Bret Hesla and Sophia Breitag, bluegrass musician Chris Jones and a classical ensemble, String Harmony. March 5th - 7th: Maya Society Hieroglyphic Workshop, at Resource Center of the Americas
Back by popular demand! The Maya Society is holding a weekend Maya Hieroglyphic Workshop on March 5-7, 2010. It will be taught by epigrapher Nick Hopkins from FSU. He's extremely knowledgeable and entertaining and it promises to be a great weekend, beginning with a talk on Maya narratives, ancient and modern on Friday March 5, 7:30 pm, 118 Drew Science, Hamline U. The workshop itself runs from 9-5 on Saturday the 6th and 9 to noon on the 7th. Preregistration is required. Early bird rates apply through Feb. 22

Through March 7th: Wing Young Huie Exhibit

The career of photographer Wing Young Huie is celebrated in an exhibition opening today in the Macalester College Art Gallery.  Examples from every major project, including the Lake Street Project and the upcoming University Avenue Project, are included.

2600 Park Ave. (6:00 PM opening reception on the 29th)
Featuring the work of seventeen of the most notable designers in Sweden today -- and they're all women. The exhibit includes more than 60 examples of design in the form of furniture, textiles, and functional and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel, and other materials.
