February 18th: "Paint a New Portrait of American" Census Meeting, at Midtown Global Market

Please join Congressman Keith Ellison & Dr. Robert Groves, Director of the U.S. Census, to discuss issues regarding the census, receive answers to your questions and learn how the 2010 Census impacts you.

February 23rd: Meet & Greet with the new 5th Precinct Inspector

Join the Uptown Association for a special meet and greet event with Eddie Frizell - the new 5th Precinct Inspector for the Minneapolis Police Department. During this informal gathering, the Inspector will provide precinct updates and answer your crime and safety questions. This event is FREE to attend and everyone is welcome. Refreshments provided. February 26th: Early Mornings with Elizabeth Glidden

This month Elizabeth will host a discussion of the 2010 U.S. Census with action steps for you to take in your own neighborhood. Come learn about the Census, why it is critical to the future of Minneapolis, and you can help make sure we all count.

March 4th: Window Rehab Energy Efficiency Workshop, at The Green Institute
6:30 - 8:30 PM, 2801 21st Ave. S.
This workshop will focus on giving homeowners the ability to choose the right option for improving the performance of their windows by making temporary or permanent fixes to reduce heat loss and air infiltration on existing windows, by reversing the effects of deterioration on older windows to enhance their durability, or by completely replacing the window itself.

Wednesdays February 17th – March 24th: Intaglio Class, at Highpoint Center for Printmaking
6:00 - 9:00 PM, 912 W. Lake St.
This course introduces participants to a variety of basic intaglio techniques including traditional and contemporary methods. A variety of etching tools, papers, and printing processes will also be demonstrated. Learn to create images comprised of line, texture, and tone printed from copper plates using such things as hard and soft ground, aquatint, sugar-lift and more! Oil based inks will be used throughout the course. All experience levels are welcome. Inks, tools, one copper plate and 2 sheets of 22" x 30" printmaking paper will be provided.

February 18th: Master Gardener: Landscape Plants for Winter Interest, at East Lake Library

Plants - from trees to perennials - are admired for their beauty in winter, complementing the magic of hoarfrost. Some plants bring wildlife to your winter landscape, others show off when they drop their leaves. Register online or call 952-847-8425.

February 18th: Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, at Magers & Quinn

Magers & Quinn Booksellers is pleased to host the West Metro regional competition of "Poetry Out Loud." The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies of the United States to support the expansion of "Poetry Out Loud," which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

February 19th
: Chinese New Year, at Midtown Global Market

Members from the Chinese Heritage Foundation will be on-hand for fortune telling and distributing red envelopes that are traditionally believed to usher in good luck for the New Year. Children can also take home their name written in traditional Chinese calligraphy. A donation to the Chinese Heritage Foundation is suggested for these services.  A traditional Chinese Lion Dance will commence at 7:00 PM, circling the Market with graceful movements and magnificent colors, to help ring in the year of the Tiger.

February 20th: Exploring Marionette Movement Workshop, presented by In the Heart of the Beast Theatre
2:00 - 5:00 PM, 1516 E. Lake St. (Plaza Verde Classroom)
In a playful atmosphere, participants will work with simple marionettes. The workshop begins with a ball suspended by a single string and moves into two and three string abstract marionettes. More advanced techniques will be explained and demonstrated.

February 24th: Conversations with Michael, at Old Arizona

Fridays through February 26th: Master Works: The Rembrandt Plays, at Bryant Lake Bowl

Rembrandt. One of greatest painters. It's only fitting that a series based on Master Works illuminates the works of this true master. Commedian Beauregard teams up with six Twin Cities playwrights and six up-and-coming directors to translate six of Rembrandt’s works to the stage.

February 27th: Black History Month Celebration, at Midtown Global Market
10:00 AM - 6:00 PM, 920 E. Lake St.
The Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center (PPCWC) and KFAI Radio host.  This celebration, entitled “Memphis to Mali”, will honor the historical, musical, cultural and artistic traditions of the African American community. There will be live entertainment, an art exhibit, book expo, and much more.

February 28th: Concert To Benefit Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership
2:00 - 4:00 PM, 2720 E. 22nd St. (Faith Mennonite Church)
Performances by songwriters and instrumentalists Linda Breitag, Ray Makeever, Bret Hesla and Sophia Breitag, bluegrass musician Chris Jones and a classical ensemble, String Harmony. This is a family-friendly concert with songs of peace and hope that will have you singing along. Freewill donations will be gratefully accepted. March 5th - 7th: Maya Society Hieroglyphic Workshop, at Resource Center of the Americas
Back by popular demand! The Maya Society is holding a weekend Maya Hieroglyphic Workshop on March 5-7, 2010. It will be taught by epigrapher Nick Hopkins from FSU. He's extremely knowledgeable and entertaining and it promises to be a great weekend, beginning with a talk on Maya narratives, ancient and modern on Friday March 5, 7:30 pm, 118 Drew Science, Hamline U. The workshop itself runs from 9-5 on Saturday the 6th and 9 to noon on the 7th. Preregistration is required. Early bird rates apply through Feb. 22

Through March 7th: Wing Young Huie Exhibit

The career of photographer Wing Young Huie is celebrated in an exhibition opening today in the Macalester College Art Gallery.  Examples from every major project, including the Lake Street Project and the upcoming University Avenue Project, are included.

March 11th - 13th: NE 2nd Avenue, at Intermedia Arts
8:00 PM, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.
NE 2nd Avenue is a compilation of characters that make Miami their home.  A jitney (small Caribbean bus) becomes a metaphor for a journey that takes the audience through the bumpy streets of the city. Presented by Intermedia Arts, Teatro del Pueblo, and Pangea World Theater.

March 13th: Bach's 325th Birthday Bash, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church

A Fundraising Dinner in Honor of J. S. Bach and to benefit the church’s sustainability strategy. Featuring the work of seventeen of the most notable designers in Sweden today -- and they're all women. The exhibit includes more than 60 examples of design in the form of furniture, textiles, and functional and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel, and other materials.
