Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- Our annual meeting is now less than three weeks
away! It takes place March 16th from 10:00 AM
- noon at La Vina (3010 4th Ave. S.), featuring a panel on Building
Our Community's
Economic Future. Tickets $15 for members, $20 for non-members,
brunch included. We'll also have business achievement awards and elect
new board members. Buy

- Minneapolis property owners should be receiving the valuation
notices for the properties by the end of March. For property
owners who feel their property has been valued too high, the City has
put together a Property
Assessment Appeals Process that will guide you through an
appeal. The assessors staff will also hold a community meeting
Wednesday, March 17th from 4:30 - 7:00 PM at Pearl Park Neighborhood
Center, 414 East Diamond Lake Road, to help answer questions.
- Restaurant Week 2010 starts in a few days, on February
28th. This year, participating Lake Street restaurants include Chiang
Mai Thai, Amore
Victoria, and Barbette.

- Speaking of restaurants, Town Talk Diner just rolled out
a new menu, with very appetizing pictures and descriptions posted to their
Facebook page.
- The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches is asking
for help in its Minnesota Food Share March Campaign. They're
looking to raise a combined total of 12 million dollars and pounds of
food during this year's campaign, which includes the Horizons Unlimited
Food Shelf at 1001 E. Lake St. Learn more at GMCC's website.
- The Star Tribune recently
reviewed Jungle Theater's new show Blithe Spirit, saying
"Sterling performances at the center of Noël Coward's witty comedy make
the Jungle's staging soar." Blithe Spirit runs through March 28th.
- The Midtown Greenway Rezoning Study is now before the
City Council. Read Steve Brandt's
summary of the study in the Star Tribune, then see the Zoning &
Planning Committee's February
18th agenda for the most recent action taken.
- Patrick's Cabaret has just started a new blog.
The premiere post goes into the Cabaret's history. Check it out and
stop back later to read more.
- The Minnesota Spokesman Recorder has
a story about the Census rally that took place last week at
Midtown Global Market. The rally featured Census Bureau Director Robert
Groves, Congressman Keith Ellison, and Mayor RT Rybak, and was focused
on how to ensure the 2010 Census has "one of the best turnouts ever."

State legislators from south Minneapolis will take questions from
residents at Breakfast with Gary on Friday, February 26th. Sen.
Patricia Torres Ray, Sen. Linda Berglin, Rep. Jim Davnie, Rep. Karen
Clark and Rep. Jeff Hayden will discuss their efforts to balance the
state budget and create jobs.
March 3rd: SCORE Small Business Consultations, at East Lake Library

Bring your small business idea/problem and experienced SCORE counselors
(retired members of the business community) will offer free, one-on-one
confidential counseling on all aspects of small business start-up and
management.
March 4th: Window Rehab Energy Efficiency Workshop, at The Green
Institute

This workshop will focus on giving homeowners the ability to choose the
right option for improving the performance of their windows by making
temporary or permanent fixes to
reduce heat loss and air infiltration on existing windows, by reversing
the effects of
deterioration on older windows to enhance their durability, or by
completely replacing the window itself.

for free. Intended for the Spanish-speaking local community.
March 13th: Neighborhood Sustainability Conference, held by Alliance for Sustainability

Attendees will be able to find resources for spring and summer
neighborhood projects. Workshops will cover topics such as community
gardening, traffic calming and energy conservation. The keynote speaker
is Mark Lakeman from the City Repair Project.

The Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center (PPCWC) and KFAI Radio
host. This celebration, entitled “Memphis to Mali”, will honor the

March 2nd: "The Wholehearted Embrace: Finding Love at the
Center of it All" author discussion,

Noted Twin Cities psychologist and Spring Forest Qigong teacher Patrick
Dougherty will discuss his latest book The Wholehearted Embrace at
Magers & Quinn Booksellers. His spiritual memoir is an honest and
often painful recounting of his journey to health and healing. His
story begins with powerful recollections of witnessing death at an
early age, including his tour of duty as a Marine in Vietnam. Upon his
return, he battled demons including alcohol, drugs, more death and
survivor guilt.

March 5th - 7th: Maya Society Hieroglyphic Workshop, at Resource Center
of the Americas
Back by popular demand! The Maya Society is holding a weekend Maya
Hieroglyphic Workshop on March 5-7, 2010. It will be taught by
epigrapher Nick Hopkins from FSU. He's extremely knowledgeable and
entertaining and it promises to be a great weekend, beginning with a
talk on Maya narratives, ancient and modern on Friday March 5, 7:30 pm,
118 Drew Science, Hamline U. The workshop itself runs from 9-5 on
Saturday the 6th and 9 to noon on the 7th. Preregistration is required.

The career of photographer Wing Young Huie is celebrated in an
exhibition opening today in the Macalester College Art Gallery.
Examples from every major project, including the Lake Street Project
and the upcoming University Avenue Project, are included.

NE 2nd Avenue is a compilation of characters that make Miami their
home. A jitney (small Caribbean bus) becomes a metaphor for a journey
that takes the audience through the bumpy streets of the city.
Presented by Intermedia Arts, Teatro del Pueblo, and Pangea World
Theater.
March 13th: Bach's 325th Birthday Bash, at St. Paul's

Seeds showcases two new works by emerging artists Kyle Loven and Eric
Van Wyk, whose work is supported by funding from the Henson Foundation.
Loven performs his one-man trptych, my dear Lewis, combining
puppets, objects, video, and original music by George Maurer. O the
Sky! by Eric Van Wyk employs shadow puppetry, objects and figures
to tell the story of a man who leaves a big city in the east to travel
west.
Wednesdays through March 24th: Intaglio Class,
at Highpoint Center
for Printmaking

This course introduces participants to a variety of basic intaglio
techniques including traditional and contemporary methods. A variety of
etching tools, papers, and printing processes will also be
demonstrated. Learn to create images comprised of line, texture, and
tone printed from copper plates using such things as hard and soft
ground, aquatint, sugar-lift and more! Oil based inks will be used
throughout the course. All experience levels are welcome. Inks, tools,
one copper plate and 2 sheets of 22" x 30" printmaking paper will be
provided.

Featuring the work of seventeen of the most notable designers in Sweden
today -- and they're all women. The exhibit includes more than 60
examples of design in the form of furniture, textiles, and functional
and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel, and other
materials.
