February 25th: Phillips West Neighborhood Organization's 13th Annual Winter Social

Join your friends and neighbors for a dinner of cultural foods, door prizes, entertainment and a fun-filled evening! Neighborhood resources and networking opportunities will be available. February 26th: Early Mornings with Elizabeth Glidden

This month Elizabeth will host a discussion of the 2010 U.S. Census with action steps for you to take in your own neighborhood. Come learn about the Census, why it is critical to the future of Minneapolis, and you can help make sure we all count.

February 26th: Breakfast with Gary Schiff

State legislators from south Minneapolis will take questions from residents at Breakfast with Gary on Friday, February 26th.  Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, Sen. Linda Berglin, Rep. Jim Davnie, Rep. Karen Clark and Rep. Jeff Hayden will discuss their efforts to balance the state budget and create jobs.

March 3rd: SCORE Small Business Consultations, at East Lake Library
1:30 PM, 2727 E. Lake St.
Bring your small business idea/problem and experienced SCORE counselors (retired members of the business community) will offer free, one-on-one confidential counseling on all aspects of small business start-up and management.

March 4th: Window Rehab Energy Efficiency Workshop, at The Green Institute
6:30 - 8:30 PM, 2801 21st Ave. S.
This workshop will focus on giving homeowners the ability to choose the right option for improving the performance of their windows by making temporary or permanent fixes to reduce heat loss and air infiltration on existing windows, by reversing the effects of deterioration on older windows to enhance their durability, or by completely replacing the window itself.

March 6th: South Minneapolis Housing & Home Improvement Fair

March 10th: Spanish-Language Tax Foru, at Colin Powell Youth Center

Learn about ITINs, tax deductions and credits, and how to file taxes for free. Intended for the Spanish-speaking local community.

March 13th: Neighborhood Sustainability Conference, held by Alliance for Sustainability
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 333 12th St. S. (Central Lutheran Church)
Attendees will be able to find resources for spring and summer neighborhood projects. Workshops will cover topics such as community gardening, traffic calming and energy conservation. The keynote speaker is Mark Lakeman from the City Repair Project.

Rembrandt. One of greatest painters. It's only fitting that a series based on Master Works illuminates the works of this true master. Commedian Beauregard teams up with six Twin Cities playwrights and six up-and-coming directors to translate six of Rembrandt’s works to the stage.

February 27th: Land of 10,000 Lakes: Minnesota's 150-year Connection to Water, presented by In the Heart of the Beast Theatre

February 27th: Black History Month Celebration, at Midtown Global Market

The Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center (PPCWC) and KFAI Radio host.  This celebration, entitled “Memphis to Mali”, will honor the historical, musical, cultural and artistic traditions of the African American community. There will be live entertainment, an art exhibit, book expo, and much more.

February 28th: Concert To Benefit Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership

Performances by songwriters and instrumentalists Linda Breitag, Ray Makeever, Bret Hesla and Sophia Breitag, bluegrass musician Chris Jones and a classical ensemble, String Harmony. March 2nd: "The Wholehearted Embrace: Finding Love at the Center of it All" author discussion, at Magers & Quinn

Noted Twin Cities psychologist and Spring Forest Qigong teacher Patrick Dougherty will discuss his latest book The Wholehearted Embrace at Magers & Quinn Booksellers. His spiritual memoir is an honest and often painful recounting of his journey to health and healing. His story begins with powerful recollections of witnessing death at an early age, including his tour of duty as a Marine in Vietnam. Upon his return, he battled demons including alcohol, drugs, more death and survivor guilt.

March 3rd: Uptown Market Fundraiser, at moto-i

March 5th - 7th: Maya Society Hieroglyphic Workshop, at Resource Center of the Americas
Back by popular demand! The Maya Society is holding a weekend Maya Hieroglyphic Workshop on March 5-7, 2010. It will be taught by epigrapher Nick Hopkins from FSU. He's extremely knowledgeable and entertaining and it promises to be a great weekend, beginning with a talk on Maya narratives, ancient and modern on Friday March 5, 7:30 pm, 118 Drew Science, Hamline U. The workshop itself runs from 9-5 on Saturday the 6th and 9 to noon on the 7th. Preregistration is required. Early bird rates apply through Feb. 22

March 6th: Book Signings at Uncle Edgar's Mystery Bookstore

Jeff Siger will have a formal signing for Assassins of Athens and Murder in Mykonos (both available as hardcovers and trade paperbacks). Erin Hart will also be signing False Mermaid, the third in her Irish mystery series.

Through March 7th: Wing Young Huie Exhibit

The career of photographer Wing Young Huie is celebrated in an exhibition opening today in the Macalester College Art Gallery.  Examples from every major project, including the Lake Street Project and the upcoming University Avenue Project, are included.

March 11th - 13th: NE 2nd Avenue, at Intermedia Arts

NE 2nd Avenue is a compilation of characters that make Miami their home. A jitney (small Caribbean bus) becomes a metaphor for a journey that takes the audience through the bumpy streets of the city. Presented by Intermedia Arts, Teatro del Pueblo, and Pangea World Theater.

March 13th: Bach's 325th Birthday Bash, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church

A Fundraising Dinner in Honor of J. S. Bach and to benefit the church’s sustainability strategy. 50+ images from 29 local printmakers. "In styles ranging from realistic to abstract, in color or monochrome, the show samples subjects that are humorous, somber, romantic, nostalgic, conceptual, steeped in history or totally contemporary."

March 19th-22nd: Seeds, at Open Eye Figure Theatre
7:30 PM Friday, Saturday, Monday, 4:00 PM Sunday, 506 E. 24th St.
Seeds showcases two new works by emerging artists Kyle Loven and Eric Van Wyk, whose work is supported by funding from the Henson Foundation. Loven performs his one-man trptych, my dear Lewis, combining puppets, objects, video, and original music by George Maurer. O the Sky! by Eric Van Wyk employs shadow puppetry, objects and figures to tell the story of a man who leaves a big city in the east to travel west.

Wednesdays through March 24th: Intaglio Class, at Highpoint Center for Printmaking
6:00 - 9:00 PM, 912 W. Lake St.
This course introduces participants to a variety of basic intaglio techniques including traditional and contemporary methods. A variety of etching tools, papers, and printing processes will also be demonstrated. Learn to create images comprised of line, texture, and tone printed from copper plates using such things as hard and soft ground, aquatint, sugar-lift and more! Oil based inks will be used throughout the course. All experience levels are welcome. Inks, tools, one copper plate and 2 sheets of 22" x 30" printmaking paper will be provided.

Through May 30th: 17 Swedish Designers, at American Swedish Institute
2600 Park Ave. (6:00 PM opening reception on the 29th)
Featuring the work of seventeen of the most notable designers in Sweden today -- and they're all women. The exhibit includes more than 60 examples of design in the form of furniture, textiles, and functional and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel, and other materials.
