Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- Congratulations to all the awardees from the events
held last week by Council Members Elizabeth Glidden & Gary
Schiff. In the Ninth Ward, awardees were Powderhorn365, Open Arms
of Minnesota, Rodrigo Juarez, and the 3000 block of 30th Ave. S. Eight
Ward winners were the Kingfield Farmers Market, The Phelps Falcons, VJ
Smith of MAD DADS, and Clorasteen Wilson.
- Lake Street business owners near Bryant Ave. may be interested in
an upcoming public meeting about creating a bicycle boulevard on
Bryant. The meeting happens on February 9th at 7:00 PM at Bryant
Square Park, 3101 Bryant Ave. S. The proposal applies to Bryant between
Franklin Ave. and Lake St., as well as between 50th St. and 58th St.
This project is intended to provide a north-south route for bicyclists.
A bike boulevard provides shared lanes (bikes and cars together) in the
middle of the street.

- The Uptown Association is still looking for participants for the “Start
Up in Uptown” Window Decorating Contest. "As a participant, you
will be paired with a group of design students from The University of
Minnesota or The Art Institutes International Minnesota, who will
design a custom display for your store window, using your products.
Then, visitors can vote on their favorite windows in- store or online.
The winning windows in several categories will receive a fabulous

- Patrick's Cabaret recently got some play
on Minnesota Public Radio. MPR was there to get behind the scenes
of Elements in Translation, which was performed at Patrick's
last weekend.
- The CW Twin Cities took a two minute tour of the Midtown
Global Market last week. The look at the Global Market's many
dining and shopping possibilities aired on January 28th, and is also available
to watch online.
- Magers & Quinn Booksellers was featured heavily in a
KARE 11 story about local readers' reactions to the death of J.D.
Salinger. See
it at KARE 11's website.
- The Star Tribune recently
ran a piece on Highpoint Center for Printmaking's new show
Select Impressions. "In styles ranging from realistic to
abstract, in color or monochrome, the show samples subjects that are
humorous, somber, romantic, nostalgic, conceptual, steeped in history
or totally contemporary."
- And finally, our thanks to all business and property who devote
their time and energy to cleaning up graffiti, even on these
cold winter days. It makes a big difference in creating a positive
environment on Lake Street.

Incentives Information Session

Carole Smith of the Internal Revenue Service will talk about: COBRA,
Work Opportunity Tax Credit, Empowerment Zone Employment Tax Credit,

incentives for businesses, and net operating loss changes for small
businesses.

March 4th: Window Rehab Energy Efficiency Workshop, at The Green
Institute

This workshop will focus on giving homeowners the ability to choose the
right option for improving the
performance of their windows by making temporary or permanent fixes to
reduce heat loss and air
infiltration on existing windows, by reversing the effects of
deterioration on older windows to enhance
their durability, or by completely replacing the window itself.

February 6th: VERVE 2010: Spoken Word Showcase!, at Intermedia

Intermedia Arts is proud to present a showcase of some of the most
dynamic spoken-word artists in the Twin Cities. All winners of
Intermedia Arts' 2009 VERVE Grant for spoken-word poets, these

February 6th & 7th: City of Lakes Loppet
The City of Lakes Loppet is an annual cross-country ski festival
that takes place in Uptown every February. Professional racers from
around the country come to Uptown to participate in one of the finest
winter events in Minnesota. Attendees have the opportunity to watch
fast paced cross-country ski races and also participate in family
events including the Junior Loppet, Minne-Loppet, Luminary Loppet and
more.

based on Master Works illuminates the works of this true master.
Commedia Beauregard teams up with six Twin Cities playwrights and six
up-and-coming directors to translate six of Rembrandt’s works to the
stage.

Featuring the work of seventeen of the most notable designers in Sweden

and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel, and other
materials.
