The Latest on Lake:

  • Our Lake Street page at Meet Minneapolis has been revamped and updated, with pictures, video, major Lake Street events, and updated text. Check it out!

  • We have the March edition of The Alley Newspaper now online at our website. Among other articles in this issue are a new story from the Pioneers & Soldiers, and a happy birthday wish to Judy Krasselt of Chicago-Lake Florist, who turns 86 this week.

  • Congrats to the Smitten Kitten, this year's winner of Quorum's Business of the Year award. A dinner honoring the awardees is being held on March 14.

  • For six seasons, the Midtown Farmers' Market has enjoyed use of the school district property at 2225 E. Lake St, but the district has signaled it will likely sell the property for redevelopment in 2009. In a recent letter, the Market and CNO asked the district and elected leaders to help create a permanent home for the Market at 2225 E. Lake. Read more at Corcoran's website.

  • Our executive director will be on the Judy Corrao Show this week, on March 11th at 7:00 PM. She'll be there to talk about Lake Street, so be sure to tune in.

  • The Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus was a big hit this past weekend at the Global Market, and we've got pictures now up on our website from their performance.

  • Cowboy Slim's, a new Uptown restaurant that will serve food inspired by the Dakotas and Montana, will be opening soon at 1312 W. Lake St.

March 12th - 29th: Conference of the Birds, presented by Pangea World Theater
7:30 PM, 1500 E. Lake St. (Avalon Theater)
Conference of the Birds metaphorically maps out the journey of the human ego and the quest for truth. In this classic tale, the birds of the world take flight on a pilgrimage to find their celebrated king, but the dangers and hardships encountered on the journey cause many in the flock to abandon their search. In the end the small number of birds that survive uncover a profound secret.

March 13th, & 20th
: Tableaux, at Bryant Lake Bowl

"A lighthearted look at everyday existence. Neighbors, spouses, lovers... The relationships and rituals we live through everyday but magnified to grandiose tableaux. With great music, gorgeous cinematics, and a little bit of song and dance added to it!"

March 14th: "Salvage Archeology in the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood" Class, at Ingebretsen's
1:00 - 2:30 PM, 1601 E. Lake. St.
Phillip J. Thompson, retired art professor from Augsburg College, will explain salvage archaeology: the rapid excavation of materials that will otherwise be destroyed by construction projects. Thompson will present a display and discussion of artifacts including bottles, pottery, china dolls, inkwells, marbles, coins, and other objects from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries that were found in the Cedar-Riverside area of Minneapolis. Cedar-Riverside was the heart of the immigrant Scandinavian neighborhood and still shows traces of the history today. Recovery methods will be explored with photographs, maps, and antique guidebooks. Your collectibles are welcomed for show and tell. Presented in conjunction with Augsburg College and the College of the Third Age. Call 612-729-9333 to reserve your spot. Cost is $5 at the door.

: "Saving Money, the Planet and Your Sanity" Workshop, at East Lake Library

Everyone wants to budget effectively and contribute to the environment, but did you know the two can go together?  Register now for this special workshop. March 14th: Discovery Saturday, at East Lake Library

"East Lake Library is anticipating the return of Martha Zemur, one of our favorite local artists!  In 'Favorite Books With Legs,' she will show kids how to make characters from their favorite stories to take home with them. March 24th: Heritage Preservation Community Meeting
6:00 - 7:30 PM, 4300 W. River Parkway (Becketwood Cooperative Chapel)
CPED-Planning announces an upcoming community meeting about heritage preservation in the Seward and Longfellow communities. A historic resource study is underway in Seward, Longfellow, Cooper, Howe, and Hiawatha neighborhoods to assess the potential for historic properties. The City was first surveyed for historic resources in the 1970s and many of today’s designated landmarks and historic districts are a result of this original survey. The upcoming meeting will be an opportunity to learn about the progress of survey project and to add your voice to the project as it unfolds.

March 27th: Author Reading, at Magers & Quinn Booksellers

March 28th: South Minneapolis Housing Fair

Featuring local contractors, lenders, and community organizations. Free seminars will include a Bargain Homes Tour presented by Corcoran resident Cynthia Frost. The 1:00 PM workshop session on how to find and finance a bargain home in this tough market will be followed by a tour of some bargain homes for sale in the neighborhood.

Through April 5th: By the Bog of Cats, presented by Frank Theatre

Set in rural Ireland, By The Bog of Cats mixes the trademark dark humor of the Irish with an uncompromising tale of abandonment and shocking self-sacrifice. 

April 6th: Guatemalan Cooking Class, at Midtown Global Market

GUATEMALAN CUISINE CHRONICLES, by Chef Amalia Damgaard, is a series of cooking demonstrations with a cultural flair highlighting traditional dishes from various regions of Guatemala. Tuesdays through June 2nd: Open House at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School-Twin Cities has begun recruiting 9th and 10th graders for the 2009-2010 school year. Cristo Rey is a private, college-prep high school that serves families of all faiths/ethnic groups who are of modest means. All students at Cristo Rey are enrolled in college preparatory classes and nationally 95% go on to college after graduating from Cristo Rey. All students participate in our Hire4Ed program, where student have a cooperate internship in banks, law firms, hospitals, etc. earning 70% of their school costs.
