The Latest on Lake:

  • A big thank you to everyone who attended our annual meeting last week, and to Senator Patricia Torres Ray for coming to share her perspective on helping local small businesses. We'd like to once again recognize this year's winners of our Business Achievement and Community Partnership awards: Lyndale Neighborhood Association, MN WorkForce Center, Magers & Quinn, Jungle Theater, Twilight Tattoo, Smith Foundry, and Northern Sun. We also welcomed three new board members to our organization: Miguel Zagal from Taqueria La Hacienda, Tom Roberts from Stonewood Properties, and Cecilia Rodriguez-Melendez from MN WorkForce Center. We're very pleased to have all three of them, and we thank departing board members Ted Muller and Paul Newman for their many contributions through the years.

  • Mayor Rybak has declared this week as World Water Week as part of the Tap Project, of and local restaurants are getting involved by asking customers to donate $1 for the tap water they usually enjoy for free. Proceeds go to UNICEF to provide clean water for children throughout the world. Participating restaurants in the Lake Street area are: Manny's Tortas, Bryant Lake Bowl, T's Place, A La Salsa, Barbette, Common Roots Cafe, View, and Jade

  • Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership builds community by bringing youth offenders, victims, community members and trained facilitators together in a conference to repair the harm done by the youth offender and promote healing, accountability and reconciliation. Common referrals to their program include shoplifting, graffiti and damage to property. They need people who have a stake in Seward or greater Longfellow neighborhoods to volunteer at the conferences as a community member or a trained facilitator.   • There are two new reviews up of Pangea World Theater's production "Conference of the Birds", from Twin Cities Daily Planet and from MinnPost. The show runs through March 29th.

  • Heavy Table has a new article up about the "Happy, Delicious Cows of Chase Brook Farm." The online article includes multiple comments from readers at the end agreeing that their meat is high quality, has excellent flavor, and is very affordable..

  • The latest Global Market winner of Goodwill Easter Seals' Customer Service Star Award is Grassroots Gourmet, who received the highest possible rating in all areas. Congratulations to them.

  • The debate over the fate of the house at 3009 Park Ave. has attracted some media attention recently. Here's one story in the Star Tribune, and another from Fox 9.

March 24th: Heritage Preservation Community Meeting
6:00 - 7:30 PM, 4300 W. River Parkway (Becketwood Cooperative Chapel)
CPED-Planning announces an upcoming community meeting about heritage preservation in the Seward and Longfellow communities. A historic resource study is underway in Seward, Longfellow, Cooper, Howe, and Hiawatha neighborhoods to assess the potential for historic properties. The City was first surveyed for historic resources in the 1970s and many of today’s designated landmarks and historic districts are a result of this original survey. The upcoming meeting will be an opportunity to learn about the progress of survey project and to add your voice to the project as it unfolds.

March 24th: MayDay Community Meeting
7:00 - 9:00 PM, 1500 E. Lake St. (Avalon Theater)
"MayDay staff artists have been distilling themes from the wealth of input we received at the February 10 MayDay Community Meeting. This Tuesday, MayDay artists will present initial ideas for the focus of this year’s MayDay Parade and Festival. We rely on the feedback of community attendees to help hone this year’s vision. The more voices, the better. This meeting is free of charge and open to anyone."

March 26th - 28th: Toy Theatre After Dark, at Open Eye Figure Theatre
8:00 PM on the 26th & 27th, 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM on the 28th, 506 E. 24th St.
Open Eye is presenting a program of Toy Theatre bringing to stage the work of five artists from Chicago and Minneapolis.  The evening promises to be fun-filled, family-friendly and an opportunity to sample some of the best puppetry work in the Midwest. Work will range from Suitcase Crankies to Object Animation to operatic Toy Theatre.

March 27th: Breakfast with Gary Schiff
7:30 - 9:00 AM, 1515 E. Lake St. (Mercado Central)
State Senators and Representatives from the Ninth Ward will speak at March’s Breakfast with Gary on Friday, March 27th, 2009. Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, Sen. Linda Berglin, Rep. Jim Davnie, Rep. Karen Clark and Rep. Jeff Hayden will attend along with Gene Ranieri, Director of the City’s Intergovernmental Relations Committee and Council Member Betsy Hodges, Chair of that committee. $5 buys breakfast.

March 27th: Early Mornings with Elizabeth Glidden

"This month we will be joined by Minneapolis City Attorney Susan Segal and Deputy Criminal City Attorney Martha Holton Dimick.  The City Attorney’s office is a key partner in public safety for the city – with responsibility for prosecuting livability crimes such as prostitution, drug-related offenses, and graffiti.  Come and learn about the City Attorney’s role in making Minneapolis a safe city by working with community, police, and the courts."

March 28th: South Minneapolis Housing Fair
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3131 19th Ave. S. (South High School)
Featuring local contractors, lenders, and community organizations. Free seminars will include a Bargain Homes Tour presented by Corcoran resident Cynthia Frost. The 1:00 PM workshop session on how to find and finance a bargain home in this tough market will be followed by a tour of some bargain homes for sale in the neighborhood.

Through March 29th: Conference of the Birds, presented by Pangea World Theater
7:30 PM, 1500 E. Lake St. (Avalon Theater)
Conference of the Birds metaphorically maps out the journey of the human ego and the quest for truth. In this classic tale, the birds of the world take flight on a pilgrimage to find their celebrated king, but the dangers and hardships encountered on the journey cause many in the flock to abandon their search. In the end the small number of birds that survive uncover a profound secret.


March 31st: Minneapolis Sister City Novosibirsk, Russia, at East Lake Library
6:30 - 8:00 PM, 2727 E. Lake St.
Did you know Minneapolis has eight sister cities? Visit the library on March 31 from 6:30-8:00pm to learn all about one of them: Novosibirsk, Russia! With the help of the Russian Cultural Center, we’ll share traditional Russian stories and activities and learn what modern day Novosibirsk looks like. Participants will be able to mail a postcard to the public library to our sister denizens across the sea. To learn more, call us at (612) 630-6550.

April 6th: Guatemalan Cooking Class, at Midtown Global Market

GUATEMALAN CUISINE CHRONICLES, by Chef Amalia Damgaard, is a series of cooking demonstrations with a cultural flair highlighting traditional dishes from various regions of Guatemala. Tuesdays through June 2nd: Open House at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School-Twin Cities has begun recruiting 9th and 10th graders for the 2009-2010 school year. Cristo Rey is a private, college-prep high school that serves families of all faiths/ethnic groups who are of modest means. All students at Cristo Rey are enrolled in college preparatory classes and nationally 95% go on to college after graduating from Cristo Rey. All students participate in our Hire4Ed program, where student have a cooperate internship in banks, law firms, hospitals, etc. earning 70% of their school costs.
