Lake
Street News Brief
Lake Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- The City Pages Best of 2009
awards just came out, and as usual Lake Street is very well
represented, with dozens of area businesses on the list, including
newcomers like Gandhi Mahal, moto-i, and Salty Tart.
It's a long list so we've put it all together on our Visit Lake
Street website. Click over to see everyone who won, and have a
look around the rest of the site while you're there!
- The newest edition of our
quarterly Lake Line newsletter is being printed and should
arrive in your mailbox very soon. And as always, it's also available
online to view now. Highlights from this newsletter include a
recap of our annual meeting, a profile of Cecilia
Rodridguez-Melendez, one of our newest board members, and important
information about City ordinances.
- Also now online
is the April/May edition of The Alley
newspaper. In includes a front page story about the history of
the MayDay Parade and a whole lot more interesting material,
be sure to download or pick up a copy!
- The
City of Minneapolis is holding public
meetings to get input on proposed changes to the City
Charter. The proposed changes involve creating a new position of
City Administrator, eliminating the Board of Estimate and Taxation, and
eliminating the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The Lake Street
area meeting has already taken place but there are three remaining
meetings that any interested party can attend and add their input. See
the link above for times and places.
- This will
be a very busy weekend for outdoor Lake Street events. First up on May
2nd, we have the long-awaited reopening of the Midtown Farmers' Market
at 22nd & Lake. Starting at 8:00 AM, the Market will have locally-produced
foods, live music, a petting zoo, and will host an East Lake
Library storytime at 10:30 AM. The Market will be ongoing every
Saturday into October, and will add Tuesday afternoons starting in July.
- Then
on May 3rd, it's the 35th Annual MayDay Parade, but on by In the Heart of the Beast Theatre.
This year's theme is "Our Common Treasury - Dig It". The parade starts
at 1:00 PM and proceeds into Powderhorn Park for the Festival and Tree
of Life Ceremony. There will be music, dancing, poetry, food, canoe
rides, and a whole lot more!
- And Lake
Street is also home this year to two Cinco de Mayo celebrations,
one on the 3rd and one on the 10th. The May 3rd event happens at the
intersection of 27th & Lake starting at noon and will feature live
music, authentic Mexican street food, a low-rider car show, and Senator
Patricia Torres Ray and Council Member Gary Schiff as speakers. On May
10th is the 4th & Lake celebration, which will be in its 11th year
and is expected to attract thousands of people with its own food,
entertainment, and business booths. Mark your calendars for all
these great events!

May 30th, 506 E. 24th St.
Open Eye
Figure Theatre proudly presents a new signature work by artistic
director Michael Sommers, who explores the world of late 1950’s—early
1960’s children’s television programs and the influence of burlesque,
parlor tricks, gags, and carnival games. Dummy, A Display, reveals that
Leonard has succeeded in enticing El to revive the old act and once
again live the dream of the good old days. Of course, Leonard has a
lot riding on it and he might even know that he is setting himself up
just a little bit. But maybe the world is ready for their act again.
Maybe Leonard isn’t so bad to be around after all…maybe he is still as
exciting as he used to be.
