The Latest on Lake:
- Please note that
during the Somali Independence Day Celebration on Saturday,
West Lake Street will be closed between Pillsbury and Blaisdell from
1:00 to 9:00 PM. Plan accordingly.
- Reviews are coming in for the new Uptown
Cafeteria. Read them from Metro
Mag and from vita.mn
writer Alexis McKinnnis, who liked the space, the Sky Bar and the
generous happy hours.
- Congrats to Town Talk Diner for
once again winning the Iron Bartender competition. See City
Pages' interview
with Town Talk team member Adam Harness.
- The Star Tribune is fond of Jungle
Theater's new show Irma Vep, saying that it "finds
the intersection between high camp and dreadful horror." The show
runs through August 1.
- The Longfellow Business Association
and Volunteers of America are bringing a clean-up program to
East Lake this summer. Residents of the VOA halfway house will pick up
litter in front of businesses on both north and south sides of East
Lake Street from 29th Avenue east to the River Road. They'll be easily
identifiable by their "Lake Street Crew" t-shirts. There are also
things all of us can do to keep Lake Street looking good:
Property and business owners: Keep those boulevards mowed. Everyone:
"stoop for the neighborhood" whenever you walk along Lake Street. Help
keep your neighborhood commercial street tidy & looking loved. With
everyone's help we'll reduce the litter, the street will look more
prosperous and safe, & hopefully it will encourage new businesses
to move in.
- The owner of Gandhi Mahal
recently gave the Page Education Foundation $1000 to support a
Page Scholar from the Longfellow neighborhood. The Page Education
Foundation's is to increase participation by Minnesota's youth of color
in postsecondary education. Gandhi Mahal owner Ruhel Islam made the
gift in honor of his late uncle.
