June 30, 2009
Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- The last part in our driving tour of Lake Street series is now on YouTube!
This one goes from 35W to Lake Calhoun and highlights a handful of the
many great places to be found there. Visit our YouTube
channel to view the previous parts of the tour and all the
other videos we've uploaded.
- Here's a very cool story from Linda McHale, owner of the Corner
Store at 900 West Lake Street: "Over the weekend of June 20 Eric
Clapton was at our shop. He heard about our shop while in Japan and
stayed an extra day so he could visit us. He spent about two and a half
hours looking through our extensive vintage collection and purchased 6
vintage motorcycle jackets. Way cool!"
- Roundy's is considering a major redevelopment of
the Uptown Rainbow Foods. "Rainbow Foods
would be
closed for up to a year while Roundy's constructs a new building on the
Rainbow Foods site. The new building would feature 10,000 Sq. Ft. of
retail space on the ground floor, 250 total parking stalls on the first
and second floors, and contain an 80,000 Sq. Ft. Rainbow Foods on the
third floor. The Rainbow Foods would be the largest grocery store in
the Uptown area and be twice the size than the existing store."
Read more about this proposal on the Our Uptown website.
- This past weekend was our first radio live remote, with
radio station WDGY 740-AM broadcasting live from the Midtown
Farmers' Market. These live remotes are part of our Lake
Street marketing campaign for the year that also includes a daily radio ad.
Upcoming scheduled future remotes include July 18 at Mercado Central
and August 15 in Uptown. Stay tuned!
- Last week the Star Tribune profiled the Magic
Bus Cafe, which is a regular at the Midtown Farmers' Market and
is also showing up to the new Uptown Market. "Inside the bus it's all
about hot dogs: long, slender, all-beef-ers made with
natural casings (there's also a popular tofu version), split
lengthwise, grilled to a tasty caramelized finish and garnished with a
bevy of brightly flavored toppings."
- Congratulations to LEDC's Ramon Leon and John
Flory for their recognition as "Innovative Idea Champions" by
the Corporation for Enterprise
Development. They'll receive the award on October 29 at the 2009
Innovation Summit in Washington, DC.
- Starting July 6, two nearby northbound I-35W ramps will
be closing for three weeks: the 35th Street entrance to northbound
I-35W and the 31st Street exit from northbound I-35W. More information
about this project can be found at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/upa/

Lake Bowl

In this “old-fashioned” cabaret, Mistress Ginger, the self-proclaimed
“flawless and lawless,” sings the songs “that got your grandmother into
bed." With Kenny Kiser on the piano, she croons the tunes of Johnny
Mercer, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and George
Gershwin, among others. Along the way, Ginger shares her own stories
of love and lust, ranging from innocent idealism to bitter blues.
Within this mix of live music, Ginger premieres her first music video,
"See-Line Woman," a dance film taking Ginger from the glitz of the
stage to the streets of Uptown on a journey of impregnation and
revelation.
July 11th: "Waking Up In Eden" book discussion, at
Magers
& Quinn

"Like so many of us, Lucinda Fleeson wanted to escape what had become a
routine life. So, she quit her big-city job, sold her suburban house,
and moved halfway across the world to the island of Kauai to work at
the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Imagine a one-hundred-acre
garden estate nestled amid ocean cliffs, rain forests, and secluded
coves. Exotic and beautiful, yes, but as Fleeson awakens to this
sensual world, exploring the island's food, beaches, and history, she
encounters an endangered paradise--the Hawaii we don't see in the
tourist brochures."

"The incomparable Sarah Agnew returns to portray over 20 characters in
this virtuoso one-woman show about the abiding love between two
families - one black and one white - and the two children that are born
into their shared household in the 1960's South Africa."
