Lake Street News Brief

June 9, 2009
Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- As promised, our new Lake Street radio ad is now online and
available for listening. This ad will play on local radio stations
JACK-FM, FM-107, LOVE-105, WCCO, KTLK, and several more. Keep an ear
out for it!
- Also on YouTube, we recently took a driving tour of Lake
Street, narrating to point out just a few of the many great and
history-filled places on this corridor. You can now watch part one,
which travels the East Lake / Longfellow area. We'll be
uploading similar videos on the remaining sections of Lake Street over
the next few weeks.
- Next week is the start of this year's Lake
Street Ambassadors program! This is our summer employment
program for local young people, where they are hired to keep Lake
Street clean and to interact with and learn from our local business
community. Much more on this in next week's e-news.
- The June edition of The Alley newspaper is now available, and The Alley now
has its own site, at www.alleynews.org.
Add it to your bookmarks!
- The Star
Tribune reports that the Lyn-Lake area is booming, "thanks to the
recent additions of moto-i, Risotto, Zen Asian Contemporary, and Tiger
Sushi." They also give a few details on two new places coming soon: Anchor
Bar at 2937 Lyndale Ave., and Sauce Spirits & Soundbar,
at 3005 Lyndale Ave.
- Many local businesses can take advantage of the Work
Opportunity Tax Credit, a federal tax credit available to all
private sector businesses. It was designed as an incentive to employers
to hire individuals in certain targeted groups who consistently
experience high rates of unemployment due to a variety of employment
barriers. WOTC is a tool for job seekers in these targeted groups to
use to help them obtain gainful employment so that they may acquire the
skills and experience needed to be eligible for better, higher paying
job opportunities. By taking advantage of the WOTC, an employer may
reduce its federal tax liability by up to $9,000 per new hire while
filling its staffing needs.

- The local office of the Small Business Administration
recently gave a presentation on the special loan programs and other
tools to help small businesses that were made available through
the federal stimulus bill. Their PowerPoint presentation is now available
here to download.
