Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- On August 13, Lake Street Council, The Green Institute, and
Minnesota Energy Smart will be holding a workshop on Best Practices
for Waste Reduction and Energy Efficiency. It will take place from
8 - 11 AM at La Vina Restaurant, at 3010 4th Ave. S. The agenda covers
waste reduction, emerging resources, energy efficiency, and how to get
started. See

- Lake Street Council is pleased to welcome our newest board
member, Agatha Vaaler of The Green Institute. Agatha will
represent the Hiawatha-Lake area and will bring valuable skills and
perspective to Lake Street Council as we move forward.
- Metromix recently
reviewed Lyn-Lake's moto-i and had great things to say,
calling it "a new bar with personality, originality, and class. "
- The Examiner website recommends
the cheap date nights at Bryant Lake Bowl, Zenos Cafe, and Barbette
for some very good deals.
- And don't forget to tune in to WDGY
740 AM on July 25th to hear the live radio remote from Mercado
Central from 11 to noon.

July 24th: Early Mornings with Elizabeth Glidden

This month, learn how Minneapolis is addressing prostitution issues.
Elizabeth hosts Assistant City Attorney Paula Kruchowski, who
prosecutes prostitution-related offenses with a new City focus of
“getting tough on johns”; Senior Assistant Hennepin County Attorney
Judy Johnston, experienced in prosecuting “promoting” or pimp cases;
and Suzanne Koepplinger, Executive Director of the American Indian
Women’s Resource Center, and an expert on domestic trafficking of
American Indian women.

In this “old-fashioned” cabaret, Mistress Ginger, the self-proclaimed
“flawless and lawless,” sings the songs “that got your grandmother into
bed." With Kenny Kiser on the piano, she croons the tunes of Johnny
Mercer, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and George
Gershwin, among others. Along the way, Ginger shares her own stories
of love and lust, ranging from innocent idealism to bitter blues.
Within this mix of live music, Ginger premieres her first music video,
"See-Line Woman," a dance film taking Ginger from the glitz of the
stage to the streets of Uptown on a journey of impregnation and
revelation.
July 26th: Sunday Brunch, at Midtown Global Market

Each Sunday, a chef from a Midtown Global Market restaurant will
prepare and sell brunch in the Market's Central Plaza. This weekend,
brunch is served by La Sirena Gorda.
July 29th: "The Blue Notebook" book discussion, at
Magers

long after the book is closed. James Levine’s The Blue Notebook

childhood, records her life on the Common Street, and makes up
beautiful and fantastic tales about a silver-eyed leopard and a poor
boy who fells a giant with a single gold coin.."

this virtuoso one-woman show about the abiding love between two
families - one black and one white - and the two children that are born

July 31st - August 2nd: Mercado Central 10th Anniversary
Celebration

A big weekend of events is planned to celebrate this important Lake
Street institution as it turns a decade old!
August 1st & 2nd: ZRS Fossils Guided Fieldtrips
The August 1 fossil trip will be collecting unique marine fossil
shells and corals from the Stewartville member of the Galena formation
in two individual quarries near the towns of Fountain and Wykoff,
Minnesota. It will meet at 9:30 AM at the intersection of Routes #5 and
#80 – one mile south of Wykoff. The August 2 trip will be collecting
marine fossil shells from the Late Devonian Period in Rockfort, Iowa..
It will meet at 10:00 AM in the east parking area of the Floyd County
Fossil and Prairie Park (formerly the Rockford Brick and Tile Company
quarry and kilm site).
Cost for these $20 (children under 12 can attend the August 2 event for
$10). Drop by ZRS at 3018 Lyndale Ave. or call 612-824-1068 to get more
details and to register.
August 7th - 9th: Uptown and Powderhorn Art Fairs
Featuring both local and international artists, where millions of
dollars of artwork are sold every year. Uptown Art Fair
August 7 - 9 at the corner of Lake & Hennepin. Powderhorn Art Fair
August 8 & 9 in Powderhorn Park.
August 8th: Taqueria La Hacienda 10th Anniversary
3:00 - 8:00 PM, 334 E. Lake St.
Featuring a stage with a DJ and a Latino live band, prize drawings, and
a food stand in the parking lot with hot dogs, roasted corn, shaved ice
and more. Tacos will be just $1 in the store.
