Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- We've rearranged our WDGY live radio remotes for this
month. Uptown will have its remote this Saturday, the 11th,
from noon to 1. Mercado Central will have its remote on July
25th from 11 to noon. This will allow both locations to promote their
upcoming events (the Mercado's 10th anniversary July 31 - August 2 and
Uptown's Art Fair August 7 - 9). Tune in to 740 AM to listen
to these live remotes when they happen!
- Today is the Midtown Farmers' Market's
first Tuesday market of the year. They'll now be up and running
Tuesdays 3:30 - 7:30 PM until they close for the year in October.
- As part of the 2009
Recovery Act, the Small Business Administration is offering a
new program called ARC Loans. These loans "can provide up to
$35,000 in short-term relief for viable small businesses facing
immediate financial hardship to help ride out the current uncertain
economic times and return to profitability." See the SBA's ARC
webpage for more.
- Join Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman for discussions
about a new Walker Library. There are two upcoming meeting at
the current Walker Library (2880 Hennepin Ave.) for these discussions:
July 11th from 2:00 - 3:30 PM, and July 16th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. These
are beginning discussions to gather community input on a new Walker
Library before a request for proposal (RFP) is issued. Call Lisa Miller
at 612-348-4304 with any questions.
- Some good news from Intermedia
Arts, as B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop is
coming back this year. Summer camps for girls 10-18 run August 11-14,
and a B-Girl Be exhibition opens at Intermedia on August 27, leading up
to a big block party on September 19. See more here.

Lake Bowl

In this “old-fashioned” cabaret, Mistress Ginger, the self-proclaimed
“flawless and lawless,” sings the songs “that got your grandmother into
bed." With Kenny Kiser on the piano, she croons the tunes of Johnny
Mercer, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and George
Gershwin, among others. Along the way, Ginger shares her own stories
of love and lust, ranging from innocent idealism to bitter blues.
Within this mix of live music, Ginger premieres her first music video,
"See-Line Woman," a dance film taking Ginger from the glitz of the
stage to the streets of Uptown on a journey of impregnation and
revelation.

Magers
& Quinn

"Like so many of us, Lucinda Fleeson wanted to escape what had become a
routine life. So, she quit her big-city job, sold her suburban house,
and moved halfway across the world to the island of Kauai to work at
the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Imagine a one-hundred-acre
garden estate nestled amid ocean cliffs, rain forests, and secluded
coves. Exotic and beautiful, yes, but as Fleeson awakens to this
sensual world, exploring the island's food, beaches, and history, she
encounters an endangered paradise--the Hawaii we don't see in the
tourist brochures."
