Lake Street News Brief
August 29, 2006

The Lake Street Council's mission is to build a cohesive strategy to insure the ongoing vitality of the Lake Street Corridor business community.

Announcements:

  • A big thank you for everyone who was able to attend our celebration with Congressman Sabo in the Global Market last night. We were glad to get the opportunity to thank the Congressman for all the good he has done for Lake Street and Minneapolis in his career, and the feedback about the documentary was very positive.

  • Monday this week was the last day on the job for this year's Lake Street Ambassadors. Hopefully all the work that they put into picking up trash along Lake Street this summer will inspire all of us to help keep the street looking good now that summer is coming to an end.
  • In that spirit, the Phillips Community CleanSweep will take place October 7th this year, so we encourage everyone to mark their calendars. You can read about last year's CleanSweep here.
  • Aaron Day, Lake Street Council President, is joining other Minneapolis leaders on a Portland Streetcar Tour next week, September 7th - 9th. Portland's streetcar system has been a great asset to that city and the tour will give people from here a first-hand look at their success as plans are being discussed for possible future streetcar line in the Lake Street corridor and in other parts of Minneapolis.
  • The YWCA Children's Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital celebrated its open house August 22nd. Our congratulations to all who helped make this wonderful addition to our community possible.
  • Marisqueria El Nayarita at 730 East Lake Street is working on facade improvement with new signage. They hope to be done by September 15th and hope to have a one-year anniversary event at that time to coincide with the Mexican Independence celebration happening that weekend.
  • Cameras are coming to Bloomington Avenue and Chicago Avenue at the Lake Street corner. There will be a tour of the Downtown Command (1st Precinct's) camera project Thursday at 10:00 AM for those who want to know more about how this system will work.
