August 4, 2009
Lake
Street Council's mission is to build
a cohesive strategy to ensure the ongoing vitality
of the Lake Street Corridor business community.
The Latest on Lake:
- Only 9 more days! Don't forget to RSVP for our
workshop on waste reduction
& energy efficiency. August 13th, 8 - 10 AM, at La Vina
Restaurant at 4th & Lake. Check the website
for full details. RSVP
by replying to this e-mail or calling 612-822-0232.
- Uncle Hugo's bookstore just got a fantastic
mention in TIME magazine! Time ran a feature on 50 Authentic
American Experiences, one from each state, and Uncle Hugo's was
their choice for Minnesota, as a rare example of a long-lasting
independent specialty bookstore. Congratulations to Uncle Hugo's and
owner Don Blyly for bringing national attention to both his store and
the Lake Street area.
- Congratulations are also in order for Lake
Street's own Pangea World Theater, which has been nominated for
the Minnesota Council of Nonprofit's Anti-Racism
Initiative Award. Voting is open for members of MCN, and closes
August 21. Please cast your vote for Pangea if you are eligible. And
take some time to read about and vote in the other categories full of
Minnesota nonprofits doing good work.
- The Minnesota State Fair
is approaching soon, starting August 27, and Midtown Global
Market will once again be there in full force. The MGM booth will
be in the International Bazaar and will feature La Loma on
August 27 - 30, Jakeeno's on August 31 - September 3, and Manny's
Tortas on September 4 - 7. The Produce Exchange and Salty
Tart will be in their own booth every day of the fair, in a tent
located next to the Agricultural Building. And Holy Land, West
Indies Soul Food, and Fiesta In America will also have
their own separate booths in the International Bazaar, and will be at
the fair every day.
- The first steps in the building of a new Walker Library
in Uptown are now taking place. The Twin Cities Daily Planet has
an article up from Uptown Neighborhood News about an initial
meeting on the topic, led by County Commissioner Gail Dorfman.
- Remember National Night Out tonight (Aug. 4th), as
neighborhoods come together to reduce crime and get better connected.
The big Phillips West event will be at 24th & Park, and
there are many other gatherings taking place. See the City's registered
events list for the one nearest you.
- And finally, this coming weekend promises to be a big one for the
Lake Street area, with both the Uptown & Powderhorn Art Fairs
taking place, and Taqueria La Hacienda's 10th Anniversary
Celebration at 4th & Lake, as well as the many regularly
scheduled events at various locations. See the calendar below, as
