The Latest on Lake

Lake Street has felt the sad effect of the 35-W bridge collapse. Artemio Trinidad-Mena, who worked at New York Plaza on 13th & Lake, was one of those who died last week on the bridge. Donations for his family can be made at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on 24th St. & 18th Ave., or at the US Bank at 919 East Lake Street. Check Minneapolis's website for the latest news and announcements about the recovery efforts. If Lake Street businesses have questions regarding distribution or workforce transportation, let us know and we will try to assist in finding answers.

National Night Out takes place this evening. Check the Registered Events List at the preceding link to find what is going on in your area. There are dozens of events happening a block or two off Lake Street throughout our 14 surrounding neighborhoods, and Lake Street Council will be doing our best to attend as many of those as possible, and keep the link between the commercial and residential areas strong.

The Fringe Festival is now ongoing, and there are plenty of Lake Street locations participating. With four venues and over 30 shows to choose from, even the most avid participant can keep very entertained while staying right on Lake! So visit Patrick's Cabaret, Intermedia Arts, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Circle of Discipline to take in as much as you can while you have the chance. The Fringe Festival continues through Sunday.

Does your business generate lots of organic waste (food waste and food soiled paper items)? If so, you could be recycling this waste and saving money too. Through a special project, Resource Recovery Technologies (RRT) is offering grant funds to businesses for organic waste recycling. These funds will cover start-up costs. Applications are being accepted now through Wednesday August 15 at 5:00 PM. Funds are limited. More information and an application form are attached. August 10th: Twin Cities Black Film Festival Kick-Off, at Midtown Global Market

“Uptown Saturday Night,” starring Bill Cosby, Calvin Lockhart and Sidney Poitier will begin at 8:00. Guests are being invited to come for dinner at the Market before the film. Film passes, day paasses, and 3-day passes are available. More information available at www.tcbff.com.

20% of all proceeds on this day will be donated to Family Tree Clinic, a non-profit sexual health care clinic in St. Paul.

Through October: Sacred Beauty: Treasures from Swedish Cathedrals and Churches, at The American Swedish Institute

A series of four related exhibits share the experiences of Swedish-American faith traditions. The first is "Sacred Beauty: The Augustana Lutheran Tradition." It includes metalwork, textiles, photographs, documents, furniture and more.
