Lake Street Council's fall edition of our quarterly newsletter, The Lake Line, will be in your mail shortly. In this issue: More on the History Center's Lake Street exhibit; a profile of our new president, Becky George; Smith Foundry's leading role in helping people who need a fresh start in life; and a lot more! Mark your calendars now for upcoming Lake Street Council events! Next week on the 21st from 4:00 - 6:00 PM is our next Lake Street social, getting local business owners together in a relaxed informal setting. It's taking place at La Bodega on the corner of Lyndale & Lake. La Bodega will be offering happy hour specials and both food & drink. And our annual fundraiser, featuring a silent auction and wine & beer tasting, is set for November 8th from 5:30 - 8:00 PM at El Nuevo Rodeo (at 27th & Lake). Tickets will soon be available for purchase: $15 for members, $20 for non-members.

Marketing is a must for every business and organization. This week, Women Venture, a local non-profit, is holding a half-day seminar called Polish Your Pitch to "help you develop more concise, effective presentations and improve your communication skills." As a special partnership with Lake Street Council, Women Venture is offering $10 off the $75 fee to LSC members. It's taking place this Friday (the 14th) from 8:30 AM - 1:00 PM, and includes continental breakfast and lunch. It will be held at 2324 University Ave. Suite 120 in St. Paul. Read the Pioneer Press's review of Jungle Theater's latest play, Speed-the-Plow, then go see it for yourself! It runs through October 14th.

The City of Minneapolis is looking to assess the economic injury or loss from the I35W bridge collapse. If you've felt such a loss, e-mail bob.lind@ci.minneapolis.mn.us your estimate of lost revenues and economic injury by this Thursday. It will help them gauge the need for a special program for businesses impacted by the bridge collapse.

September 15th: Bryant Lake Bowl Block Party
5:00 - 10:30 PM, 810 West Lake Street.

Featuring lots of music, local organic food, and a flea market.

September 15th: Mexican Independence Day at Mercado Central

3:30 - 11:30 PM, 1515 East Lake Street

A family-oriented fun filled day, with Nathan Wolf (Minnesota's Mexican Consul) reenacting the "call to liberty" at 10:30, followed by a live broadcast of Mexico's president making the call to end the day.

September 16th: Mexican Independence Day Parade & Celebration
11:30 AM - 6:00 PM, intersection of 4th Ave. S. & East Lake Street
The day starts with a parade from Bloomington to Clinton at 11:30. Many booths from local businesses, food vendors, schools, churches, and nonprofits serving the Latino community will be there.

September 18th: Lake Street Latino Business Owner Meeting
2:00 PM, 1526 East Lake Street (Guayaquil Restaurant)
A meeting for the Lake Street Latino business owners, City Council Members, and police.

September 18th: Grand Opening of "Right On Lake Street"

6:00 - 9:00 PM, 345 Kellogg Blvd. W. (Minnesota Historical Society, in St. Paul)
Various music, theatrical performances, food samplings, and more throughout the evening. The exhibit continues through March 9th.

September 19th: Groundbreaking for M & I Bank
10:00 AM, 320 East Lake Street (by Cristo Rey High School)

September 19th: Adult Education Fair, at Midtown Global Market
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 920 East Lake Street
Midtown Global Market has teamed up with the Twin Cities Adult Education Alliance for a comprehensive, on-site education fair. Representatives from several local colleges and universities will be available to talk with you about your educational options and help you find the program that’s right for you.

September 20th: PPNA's 25th Anniversary Celebration & Neighborhood Gathering
5:30 - 8:30 PM, 3400 15th Ave. S. (Powderhorn Park Community Center)
Free food, music, artwork, and silent auction, followed by board meeting and election of new board members.

Septmeber 21st & 22nd: The Page Out Loud, at Patrick's Cabaret

"Karawane: or the Temporary Death of the Bruitist", a journal of experimental performance texts, celebrates its 10th anniversary and the release of Issue #10 with a special weekend of performances at Patrick's Cabaret.

September 22nd: Southside Community Festival and Get Out the Vote Celebration
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM, 3400 4th Ave. S. (Green Central Park)
Rescheduled from August because of weather. A community event with the purpose of bringing neighbors together; increasing awareness of city, state, and community resources; and encouraging partnerships between neighbors and organizations.>

September 27th - 30th: Explorations in Flamenco, at Intermedia Arts
8:00 PM Thursday - Saturday, 7:00 PM Sunday, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.
Intermedia Arts and Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre present Explorations in Flamenco, a night of exciting new dance pieces by flamenco choreographers and dancers. Part I: Hiroshima—A Night Dreamt and a Day Flashed to Burn; Part II: Tia (Auntie).

Septmber 28th: Stormwater Bus Tour: Rain Gardens, Green Roofs, and More
8:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Longfellow Community Council brings you this free tour of commercial sites around Minneapolis that have used best management practices to handle stormwater on site. Geared for businesses, commercial property owners and developers, but open to all. Pre-registration required.
