The Latest on Lake:
- Foodie magazine Heavy Table recently spent
an evening
with Jamal Hashi, co-owner and chef for the Global Market's Safari
Express. Jamal explains some Somali culinary history, takes the
writer shopping around the Global Market for his favorite ingredients,
and shares a delicious recipe for mango curry chicken.
- Figlio recently closed down for a big remodel, and the Star
Tribune is
now reporting that when the space reopens, the new name will be Il
Gatto. Expect an opening around November, with a new Italian menu.
- The Martin Olav Sabo Bridge over
Hiawatha has won
a national award, getting the Federal Highway Administration
Environmental Excellence Award for non-motorized transportation.
- The brand new Lyndale Tap House just opened
yesterday. It's at 2937 Lyndale Ave. S., in the former home of JP's.
- The Midtown Global Market will soon be launching a new
program for toddlers and their families called Wee Wednesdays.
Occurring every Wednesday from 10-1, it will featureinteractive
programs, hands-on activities, and free lunch for kids five and under
at participating Midtown Global Market restaurants. The inaugural Wee
Wednesday on October 7 will feature the Okeedokee Brothers Band,
face painting and a coloring activity.

Week
Participating restaurants will present specially priced meals
(lunch, dinner, or both) that showcase their culinary offerings in the
local dining scenes. Lake Street area restaurants are participating,
including moto-i, Herkimer, Amore Victoria, Stella's Fish Cafe, and
Sushi Tango.
October 2nd: Hyphe-NATIONS Community Dialogue, at Pangea
World Theater

Immigration Matters is a site specific artistic and community based art
project dealing with immigration migration and displacement in our
diverse Twin Cities communities, nationally and globally. This project
looks at how the Latino community has been targeted and marginalized.

October 2nd & 3rd: Mark The Encounter, at Open Eye
Figure Theatre
7:30 PM, 506 E. 24th St.
Mark The Encounter is a new one-man show written and performed by
Chris Sullivan. His performance work explores the positions of power in
one on one communications, and specifically the notion of submission
and control, particularly as related to the dynamics of family, and in
relationships of love and hate. In this work, five characters all
played by Sullivan, are presented in twelve “acts”.

Farmers' Market
8:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 22nd & Lake
All
products are sold to you direct from MN and WI farmers,
producers, and artists. The market offers a bounty of fruits,
vegetables, flowers, plants, cheese, meat, bread, and other delicious
local foods, as well as handmade soaps, greeting cards, jewelry, and
much more. The Market accepts Visa, Mastercard, EBT, FMNP, and SFMNP.
October 3rd: Ingebretsen's Travel Fair
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, 1601 E. Lake St.
"The focus is Scandinavian travel, of course, and we’ve lined up
experts in the field with whom you can talk and learn about the many
different things there are to see and do. Representatives from Borton
Travel, Iceland Air, and Thorpe Tours will be there as well as our own
Ted and Diane Noble, who lead tours to Sweden. Recent tours have
included boat trips on the Gota Canal and stays at the medieval city of
Visby."
October 4th: Taste of Lake Street,
at Midtown Global Market
1:00 - 5:00 PM, 920 E. Lake St.
Savor fantastic food tastings from 40 Lake Street area restaurants plus
wine & beer tastes. Tickets $25 in advance ($30 at the door) and
include all Food and Beverage "tastes". Entertainment by local
musicians, wine auction and games. Fabulous raffle prizes, door prizes
and more! All proceeds go to Minneapolis food shelves.
October 8th & 9th: Holy
Trinity Church Annual Fall Symposium

The event, with the theme, “Living a Certain Life in Uncertain Times,”
will be led by Barbara Hoese, principal and president of The Inventure
Group, a Twin Cities-based consulting firm which is committed to
helping people bring purpose to work. Participants may register for
Thursday evening only ($10) or for both days ($20). For more

October 10th: Live Music: The Wreck, with guess Scott
Moses Murray, at Old Arizona

The Wreck is an eclectic cover band, ranging from Blues, R&B, and
straight up Rock and Roll, both older and newer. Very focused on Fun.
$5 cover.
October 17th: 2nd Annual Cheese & Apple Festival, at
Midtown Global Market
1:00 - 4:00 PM, 920 E. Lake St.
The theme will center around locally grown products with up to twenty
different local apple varieties, up to a dozen cheese varieites,
cooking demonstrations and kids' activities.
October 17th: "A Room For Learning" Author Discussion, at Magers
& Quinn
7:00 PM, 3038 Hennepin Ave. S.
In this stirring account of a teacher and his twelve students tucked
away in the mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently
documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit
and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and
poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for
Learning evokes a spirit of change, allowing adolescents a hand in
their education.

Palace of the End, presented

Palace of the End is composed of three monologues, all based on factual
people and events, whose characters and words are imagined by the
playwright. It recently received the 2009 Amnesty International Freedom
of Expression award at this summer’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a prize
that recognizes productions of excellent artistic merit that build
understanding and engagement of human rights.

Starring Alayne Hopkins and Sam Bardwell. The year is 1914, and a young
bride-to-be dreams one last night of love and war. Even with an ocean
between them, Mary and Charlie inhabit each other's dreams. But as the
dark clouds of World War 1 gather overhead, the strength of their bond
is about to be tested. This moving and magical play is a love letter to
the power of memory, hope and innocence...
